Adventure on a budget: Scouting in Bedfordshire offers low cost action for kids

Scouting in Bedfordshire has grown in recent years as a better value option than many children’s clubs. Since 2008 Scout numbers have risen by 8% from 4589 to 4955.

Luton Explorer Sea Scouts Take To The Air

They normally sail yachts at Luton Hoo at a sedate 3 mph. But 23 Explorer Sea Scouts from Luton’s Riparian Unit have just earned their wings in gliders flying through the skies above Dunstable at up to 100 mph. It was an experience that left them breathless.

Photographic Competition

The Forest Stewardship Council UK (FSC UK) has launched a photographic competition to celebrate 2011 - The International Year of Forests. FSC UK is a registered charity dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. For more competition details see the flyer

Theme: We are looking for striking seasonal photos taken in an FSC forest or of an FSC product. To find your nearest FSC certified forests see www.fsc-uk.org/ukforests. Your image may show a forest scene, the flora and fauna found in a forest or a close up of your favourite FSC product. The deadline for the winter entries is March 31st so get snapping!

We hope that keen photographers across the UK will take part in our competition, we have some attractive prizes to offer. Prizes will be awarded for each season in 2011 with a separate category for under 16’s.


The Jubilee Woods Project

Working with Sainsbury's Active Kids, the Woodland Trust are setting out to plant 6 million trees for the Queens Jubilee including 60 Diamond Woods (one for every year of her reign). Packs of around 30 trees are available free and will be sent out in November 2011 to those who register. Applications are needed from February 2011. To register go to the Woodland Trust website. There are also opportunities for smaller packs down to the single lonely pine if you wish.

County Directory 11

Issue 4.0

The county directory has been updated, the current issue 4.0 for 2011 is now available. To make changes to the directory, please ensure that your District Appointment Secretary is kept informed as to any changes in leadership, addresses, telephone numbers or e-mail addresses.

BBC Look East

Muslim Scouts Give TV Audience A Taste Of The Future

A Muslim Scout Group, based in Luton, has given the region’s TV audience a taste of the future of Scouting. They appeared on BBC Look East to show how to construct a model of the solar system as part of the new Cub Scout astronomer badge to be launched next month. This is one of 42 new badges introduced by the Scouts to make the movement more relevant to today’s society.
