Back To Basics For 100 Cubs  & Their Leaders

Over 100 Cub Scouts and their leaders had a back to basics adventure day at the county’s camp site in Bromham. These eight to ten year olds learned how to light fires, cook a meal, tie knots, plot a cross country route and find their way blindfold through a minefield. They also showed remarkable maturity when faced with a mock DIY accident with an unconscious patient.

 


High Sheriff Pays Late Night Visit To Scouts & Guides

Bedfordshire High Sheriff, Mr Nazir Jessa, paid a surprise late night visit to the Scouts and Guides giant sleepover in Luton’s Mall Arndale on Saturday hot foot from a previous engagement in Bedford. Over 200 young people and their leaders from all over Luton were there to greet him. Organised by District Commissioner Kam Patel, the overnight camp was a sponsored event to raise funds for NOAH the charity.


New Kids On The Block In Wootton

The 11,000 strong population of Wootton in north Bedfordshire woke up one fine October morning recently to a new sight and sound after one of the biggest investitures of Beaver Scouts in the county’s history.


Scouts Master The World's Airwaves

Scouts from Luton’s Icknield District became masters of the airwaves during three days of hectic activity as they took part in the 51st Jamboree on the air. Helped by radio hams Brendan Owen, Ray Aldous and Nick Jarman, the youngsters passed messages to fellow Scouts from all over the world.

County Directory 08

Issue 1.6

The county directory has again been updated, the current issue 1.6 for 2008 is now available. To make changes to the directory, please ensure that your District Appointment Secretary is kept informed as to any changes in leadership, addresses, telephone numbers or e-mail addresses.

A full listing can be found on the Contact Us page and the updates can also be found as individual district directory listings on the Districts page.

County Young Leaders & Explorer Scout    Skills Day

22nd November

Covering the Young Leader Modules C, G, H & I and a First Aid training session. This is a must for any Young Leader in the County. There is no charge for this course, but you will need a packed lunch and a pen!

County  Explorer Scout Summer Camp 09

A provisional booking for the Merkenveld Scout Centre, near Bruges in Belgium has been already made, that we need to confirm as quickly as possible in order to guarantee the site and transport. The estimated maximum cost charged by the County for participants will be £265-00. There are some forty places available to Explorer Scouts and five places for section leaders on offer – on a first come, first booked basis.

MID BEDS -              TOPS ACTIVITY

The Government want all young people to participate in 5 hours of physical activity and sport by 2011. Therefore we have some funding to help achieve this and one of our initiatives is to train as many leaders of uniformed organisations to use Top Activity equipment.

 

We are therefore running another training session over 2 nights in January.

Please Note: This is open to any group within the Mid Beds District Council boundaries, at this time we are unable to offer this to groups outside of this area.


 

Sail O.D.1

 

O.D.1 is a Westerly Oceanlord 41 operated as a Sail Training Vessel for Explorer Scouts. Based in Portsmouth Harbour, her normal cruising ground for weekends is the Solent, with longer trips giving the chance of trips further afield. O.D.1 normally sails with a qualified Skipper and Mate and a crew of 7 Explorer Scouts, plus one Leader.

BBC Look East

Muslim Scouts Give TV Audience A Taste Of The Future

A Muslim Scout Group, based in Luton, has given the region’s TV audience a taste of the future of Scouting. They appeared on BBC Look East to show how to construct a model of the solar system as part of the new Cub Scout astronomer badge to be launched next month. This is one of 42 new badges introduced by the Scouts to make the movement more relevant to today’s society.
