The world No. 1 archery champion and Olympic team member owes her start to the Stotfold Scout Group. She is Nicky Hunt and her 11 year old brother came home from a troop meeting one day with stories of archery prowess. She took up the sport and by the age of 12 was on the England team. Recalls Group Scout Leader Nick Peace, “She went to school in Stotfold with my daughter and we have followed her progress with mounting excitement. On her website: www.nickyhunt.co.uk, she writes, “I found I had a talent for archery by chance. One day my brother tried the sport at Scouts in Henlow. I liked the idea, joined a local archery club and by the age of 12 was representing England.” Wow! Nicky’s rise to international fame took in competitions around the world and she is now ranked No. 1 in her discipline.
Victoria Pembleton shares her Gold medal with Stotfold Scouts. Next July she expects to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games. “We will all be rooting for her,” said Nick Peace. Stotfold has a tradition of raising Olympic champions. World and Olympic record holder cyclist Victoria Pembleton was also raised in the town and went to school there. She reckons she started cycling as soon as she could walk! Victoria will compete in the Olympic Games next year. She took time out of her busy schedule to share her recent gold medal with the Stotfold Scout Group. |
