Biggleswade Cub Scouts Become Instant TV Cameramen

Cub Scouts from the 1st Biggleswade Scout Group decided to show adults what volunteering was all about at their meeting on Shrove Tuesday. They took over the TV cameras to record some of the events during a promotional TV programme to recruit more adults. TV cameraman Maurice Hesford said, “They picked up camera and microphone techniques remarkably quickly.” Danny Lawson (10) became the youngest cameraman on record as he competently handled the controls. On camera the youngsters from the 30-strong pack showed off all the badges they had gained.

The main event of the evening was a pancake cooking and eating contest with a competition to see who could toss and catch pancakes without dropping them. The Cubs managed to make and eat over 60 complete with healthy fruit fillings. That is all except one who made a hotdog style pancake complete with tomato sauce.

The event was organised by Cub Scout Leader Gary Inman with his team of five assistants including daughter Mylee who is a young leader. He said, “We always have great fun. You can tell from the noise that they like what we do for them.”

Group Scout Leader Nicola Woodward explained, “This is a fun-filled evening with a twist. The Cubs enjoyed the experience, learned how to cook and found out what made a healthy meal as part of their home help badge.”

County Commissioner John Duley said, “This is a typical Scout group. It has a strong local interest and some very dedicated leaders. But we could add to the 200-strong member ship if we had more volunteers.” He added, “It’s a great experience for those who take part and it keeps you healthy and active.
