Burst Pipe Sets Houghton Regis

Cub Scouts a £1000 Challenge

Scouts like a challenge and those from Houghton Regis are no exception. When a burst pipe flooded their Scout hut they tackled the problem with typical Scout spirit and even found enough energy to help a national charity. After the mops and buckets were put away they looked at the damage and decided that nothing less than a mammoth fund-raising effort was needed to give the hut the face lift it needed.

The Cub Scouts and their leaders launched a series of sponsored marathon events at their hut near Cemetery Road all based on the number 26. For 26 hours over last weekend they went without sleep and raised sufficient funds to pay for the repairs and contribute £500 to their favourite charity, Children with Leukaemia.

Cub Scout Leader Will Shaw who helped at the event said, “Scouting not only allows young people to have a great adventure, but it’s also plays an important part in educating them about other issues that affect people in their lives. We all felt that childhood leukaemia was an excellent example and a worthy cause for us to support.”

He went on, “Challenges included non-stop dancing for 26 minutes, pushing a car 26 meters and even making 26 sandwiches with your feet! This fantastic event raised over £1000 for the two worthy causes thanks to everyone’s amazing support. It was a fun-packed 26 hour event that gave the Cub Scouts a chance to complete 26 challenges with no sleep. The 12 youngsters and six leaders who took part had a fantastic time. Thanks to their efforts, we now have a refurbished hut and the children’s charity is also richer.”
