It’s a good job Scout Leaders are slightly deaf for the sound of 6000 excited Beavers and Cubs having fun at Gilwell Park Activity Centre in deepest Essex on their Adventure Day is enough to test even the best eardrum. It’s an action-packed event with over 100 activities to try out.

About 50 young people from around Bedfordshire set out to enjoy themselves in the only way the average 6 to 10 year old knows – noisily! They came from Studham, Kensworth and Whipsnade, they arrived from Colmworth and Riseley and the 1st Langford set of early down the A1 to get a good place. It makes you wonder.

But the crowd of of youngsters had their own view. They said, “We tried rafting, quad biking and pedal cars. One Beaver from Colmworth won the Formula 1 Hot Rod Race. Fred aged six tried a really scary abseil and survived. We launched hot air balloons and fired water filled bottles into the air. It was great. Best of all,” one said, “We climbed trees and no one told us off.”

Christine Constantine, Malcolm Hooley, Kevin Cantwell and Les Soden were the leaders who arrived back shattered by the experience but now, for some reason they can’t explain, are looking forward to the next time.
