Cub Scouts from all over Leighton Buzzard forgot their PlayStation or XBOX games when they took part in the District Cub Scout board games challenge on Sunday at Grovebury Road Scout Headquarters. These were fun-packed traditional games that demanded a range of mental abilities and physical skills. For almost four hours, 35 Cub Scouts in five teams competed with one another for the honour of an individual title or the group trophy.
The games included well known ones such as Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Dominoes, Snap and Beetle. A variation of Scrabble called Boggle checked the youngsters’ ability with words and another called Connect 4 was a test for the sharp-eyed. Finally, the demanding Twister challenge gave the Cubs the chance to bend themselves into all sorts of shapes. The aim was to earn points for their Pack and to compete for an individual age group prize.
After a breathless and exciting contest the overall winners were the 1st Leighton Buzzard Cub Scout Pack with an average of 22 points. Winner in the under nine’s was Nathan Wallis of Trinity Cub Pack, and in the over nine section the champion was Max Freebairn from Tilbridge Cub Pack. Cub Scout Leader Andrew Goddon who organised the event said, “The Cubs had a lot of fun especially with the Twister challenge which gave the athletic a chance to shine. It’s amazing that these traditional games are still as popular as ever despite the sales of electronic gadgets.”
