Over 100 Cub Scouts and their leaders had a back to basics adventure day at the county’s camp site in Bromham. These eight to ten year olds learned how to light fires, cook a meal, tie knots, plot a cross country route and find their way blindfold through a minefield. They also showed remarkable maturity when faced with a mock DIY accident with an unconscious patient. The winning team from Ouse Valley were just short of a 500 point record.
Leaders came from all over the county to help at the event. Organised by Assistant County Commissioner Alan Burnham, the adventure day brought together a multitude of leadership skills. One taught firelighting without matches while another set up outdoor stoves where Cubs could demonstrate their cooking abilities. One group had the youngsters planning a cross country hike with the aid of an OS map while another followed a Scout trail through the woods.
Kevin Greenwell and Jon Clarke from Lea Valley District in Luton set up a realistic mock DIY accident with fallen ladders and a power drill. The Cubs had to cope with an unconscious victim and another who complained loudly about his damaged shoulder. The teams ‘rang’ for an ambulance, checked for breathing and placed the accident victim in the recovery position. They treated a gaping leg wound and calmed down the other casualty while placing his arm in a sling.
Teams came from all over the county to take part but the winners were Ouse Valley the county’s smallest district. Second were contestants from Biggleswade and third another Ouse Valley team.
