To the delight of two dozen youngsters, MP Alistair Burt had a star turn at the Gemini Beaver Scouts Christmas part in Biggleswade when he demonstrated his skill at musical chairs. But he finally lost his seat to the winner a lively Beaver Scout called Georgia. He was slightly better at playing musical statues to the tune of Snowman on his merry way.
Mr Burt talked to the party goers about his time as a Cub Scout and the pop stars that he liked. He presented Rohan Neal, 8 and Georgia Carter, 8 with their Chief Scout Awards. He said, “These two youngsters are the stars as they move on to become Cub Scouts. They have devoted nearly two years of effort to do a whole range of challenges. It was jolly hard work for them and a marvellous result. But we mustn’t forget the leaders who encouraged them. They did a good job too.”
The MP took time to talk with the departing Group Scout Leader Gary May and his replacement Nigel Betts about the needs of the group. He shared their concerns about the present headquarters and its repair bill and how to cope with an expanding and enthusiastic group. His advice was to look at new building developments in the town where part of the expansion should be facilities for youth groups.
Both Beaver Scout Leader Nicky Harradine and new Group Scout Leader Nigel Betts were encouraged by Mt Burt’s support. They said, “We accept there is no short term fix but it’s good to know we have high level backing for what we do.”
