Group Scout Leader Cavan Moore from the 16th Someries Scout Group has died from cancer of the colon, at the age of 62. A long-serving and much loved member of the Scout community in Someries District, Cavan had four passions. One was his family, the second his Scouting, the third his love of steam trains and the last his support for his local church, St Christopher’s in Round Green. Cavan’s final thought on the day before he died was the work still needed to renovate the electrical system at the church. Cavan was born in 1948 and lived in Pondwicks Road backing on to the railway line. It was here that he developed his lifelong passion for steam trains. His other passion started when he joined St Mary’s Scout Group at the age of eight. This matured through Scouts, a Queen’s Scout Award, Scout Leader, Assistant District Commissioner and finally Group Scout Leader. He proudly led the 16th Someries Scout Group at the St George’s Day Parade in 2007 just months before he had to retire through ill health. The following year he had his proudest moment when his family gave him the birthday present of a lifetime – a special trip on the footplate of a steam train. Not only did he travel on it but he learned to drive it and took the controls for a journey he talked about for months. Over 200 guests joined the family to fill the church for his funeral which brought laughter and some tears when he was carried to his final resting place to the tune, “My old man’s a dustman.” He was a caring husband to Anne, a father and much loved friend to his three children and an inspiration for Scouting in Luton.
