300 Beaver Scouts Take A

Fun-Filled World Tour

Over 300 Bedfordshire Beaver Scouts went on a seven-hour world tour of hectic, fun-filled activities at Bromham Camp Site on Saturday. These six to eight year olds designed and sailed model boats Indian style, followed a blindfold trail through an English wood, launched NASA space hoppers, made woggles out of Turkish red liquorice and took part in Australian backwoods cooking. But their favourite was the South American Angel Falls, a 50 foot water soaked slide where everyone could get thoroughly wet.

Over 40 activities from around the world were on offer for the day long event. Organised by District Commissioner Nigel Taylor, County Fellowship Leader David White and County Beaver Scout Leader Anne Cladd, the fun-filled day also involved 150 leaders who tried to control their excited colonies of young people for seven hours. Every 20 minutes 40 teams changed to the next activity on the list while their leaders did their best to keep up with them.

At the Angel Falls water slide, Scout Leader Alan Goodman was in charge of the water hose to keep the slide wet and trying unsuccessfully to avoid soaking the Beaver Scouts waiting their turn. Evan John (7) from Sundon Park Scout Group in Luton was just one of many Beaver Scouts who made numerous trips until he could reach the bottom in one go. A close second was Beaver scout Josh Sims (7) from the Caddington Scout Group.

At the camp fire gathering to close the event the 300 Beaver Scouts raised a roar of approval that could be heard for miles. “It was the best time I have ever had,” said one tired but excited youngster.
